Finding Sanctuary Within
~ A film about what it takes to keep going
This film follows animal advocates as they navigate the emotional weight of their work and the mindfulness practices that help them stay grounded in it. Through their stories, we begin to understand what sustains them and what it means to be immersed in suffering without losing yourself along the way.
There’s a question that keeps coming up in this work.
How do you keep going when you’re constantly exposed to suffering?
For many animal advocates, the weight of what they witness and the responsibility they carry is built into their daily lives.
This work is never finished. And over time, that takes a toll.
Finding Sanctuary Within came from having the same conversation in different places with people who are navigating it in real time. People who are doing everything they can for animals, while trying to hold onto their own sense of balance.
So often the work and sacrifice go unseen. Finding Sanctuary Within was made to honor the people who show up for animals at great personal cost.
And if we can understand what helps them stay in the work without being consumed, we can begin to build something more sustainable, not just for individuals, but for the future of this movement.
This story unfolds across very different places, but the thread is the same.
People doing difficult work and finding their own way to stay present within it.
TASHI NYIMA
In Dallas, we spend time with Tashi Nyima, a Buddhist monk who works closely with animal advocates. Through his teachings and retreats, he offers a different way of approaching the work. Not by turning away from suffering, but by learning how to be with it. His presence in the film brings a layer to the story that’s rooted in stillness and reflection through the practice of returning to yourself.
UKRAINE FRONTLINE
In Ukraine, the work takes on a different intensity. Here, animal rescuers are operating in the middle of an active war zone, where survival is uncertain and resources are limited. The emotional weight is immediate and unavoidable. These moments show what it means to continue caring in the most extreme conditions, and the kind of resilience that can only be understood by those living it.
At Luvin Arms Sanctuary in Colorado, we see how this work is sustained over time. Through education and a strong sense of community, the sanctuary creates space not just for animals, but for people to reconnect with why they started. It’s a place where compassion is practiced in small, consistent ways, and where mindfulness becomes part of the rhythm of the work.
LUVIN ARMS
WOLF HAVEN
At Wolf Haven in Washington, the story expands to include the complexity of coexistence. Here, conservationists and ranchers sit at the same table, working toward shared solutions. It’s not simple, and it’s not always comfortable. But it shows what can happen when people are willing to stay in the conversation and look for a different way forward.
Resources
Throughout this film, you’ll see how practices like mindfulness help people stay grounded in difficult work.
With this in mind, we’ve created a series of guided meditations with Tashi Nyima as a resource for our community. It’s something you can return to in your own time, whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, searching for clarity, or simply needing a moment to ground yourself.
For many of the people in this film, mindfulness isn’t a concept. It’s a way of staying present in the face of difficult realities. A way of creating space between what they witness and how they carry it.
These guided meditations offer a simple entry point into that practice. They’re an opportunity to slow down and find your footing again.
