Sanctuary Doc tells visual stories of compassion for animals within our world’s biggest challenges.

A non-profit multimedia project, Sanctuary Doc illuminates the major issues facing our world today by focusing on animals and the people who rescue them. From war and conflict, animal farming, deforestation, climate change, animal labor, the exotic pet trade, to homelessness and natural disasters, our goal is to document examples of compassion between humans and non-human animals.

To show just how impactful our considerate intentions can be.

Featured Short Film

Transfarming Switzerland, a short film created for We Animals Media, documents one animal activist’s unique approach: to work with, not against, animal farmers. Sarah Heiligtag transforms animal farms across Switzerland and Europe into vegan farms and animal sanctuaries. Looking to make a drastic change in their business, animal farmers learn about Sarah, make contact with her and together they develop a plan to transform. Their reasons are both environmental and moral.

These changes are challenging, as they must adapt infrastructure and finances as well as deep-rooted farming practices. Despite this, Sarah has transformed more than 100 farms. What some animal farmers may view as a threat, these farmers view as an opportunity for change and progress towards a more sustainable future of farming.

Help us multiply our impact.

In addition to our own distribution, content from Sanctuary is contributed to We Animals Media, which allows these photos and films to be used by publications and animal rights organizations at no charge. It is being used in articles, viral videos, on billboards, in classrooms, and in parliaments around the world, making animals visible in more places than ever before. We give lectures, teach workshops, mentor students and host exhibitions. We also create visuals for each rescue organization we partner with to help them promote their work with high quality images.

Support from organizations and our patrons helps us hire local producers and guides, cover travel and lodging, but the biggest gift is time. It allows us to take the necessary weeks or months to dive into each issue and create a deeply compelling story.
