<image:caption>These egg farms operate under cramped and unsanitary conditions on the outskirts of Hanoi, Vietnam. Hens are packed tightly into filthy battery cages, surrounded by the constant stench of ammonia and excrement. Due to infrequent cleaning, accumulated waste sits up to half a metre deep beneath the cages.A farm in Hung Yen province, south of Hanoi, raises a native chicken breed for egg production. These caged hens are said to live for several years, unlike standard breeds, which are typically kept for one to two years. This farm also breeds Dong Tao chickens, known as "dragon chickens," for meat. This breed is valued across Asia for their oversized legs, which are eaten as a delicacy believed to improve human skin quality due to high collagen content. When chicks reach 12 days of age, workers trim the birds' beaks, a common practice to prevent injuries from aggression between the animals. One breeder acknowledged high levels of mold throughout the chickens' housing. The birds frequently suffer respiratory illnesses, resulting in respiratory discharge and severe facial swelling. Many cannot open their eyes, leaving them effectively blind. The eggs from these farms supply urban restaurants and local markets in surrounding communities.</image:caption>

<image:caption>During an open rescue of laying hens from this large industrial egg production farm, activists from the Otwarte Klatki Association witnessed massive numbers of hens living in crowded, stressful and unsanitary conditions. These chickens live in cage systems throughout several multi-story hen houses, each accommodating tens of thousands of hens. Their entire lives are spent in these crowded cages atop bare wire grids without bedding and only a few square centimetres of space for each bird. They cannot access daylight or engage in natural behaviours such as digging and taking sand baths.Simple plastic curtains intended to create a nesting area within a cage provide minimal comfort without any enhancements. Hens lay their eggs directly onto the cage wire grid, and the lack of privacy creates further stress for the hens. Injuries result from the birds becoming stuck between cage bars, dividers and nests, with leg injuries frequently caused by direct contact with the cage's wire floors. As the laying cycle continues, the hens eventually experience feather loss due to stress and exhaustion. After a prescribed number of months, they are then sent to slaughter when their egg production drops.Such egg production farms reportedly do not treat sick or injured animals as this is reputedly unprofitable. These animals are allegedly kept until their demise, posing a disease-spread risk in this overcrowded industrial farming environment. During the photojournalist's visit, dead hens were witnessed left in cages, exposing healthy chickens to contact with the decomposing remains.</image:caption>

The hens, who are kept in battery cages to lay eggs for human consumption, live in spaces where they can not flap their wings in. Typical cages hold up to five hens in each. In 2022, the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries states on its website that "There are approximately 19 million hens in Australia kept on commercial layer farms to produce eggs for human consumption.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In early 2024, in the largest investigation into farmed animal welfare in the history of the United Kingdom, activists from Animal Rising visited 45 farms certified by the RSPCA Assured scheme, including this “high-welfare” egg farm housing more than 64,000 hens living in cramped conditions. Many of the birds were observed in a poor state of health with missing feathers and other injuries and the decomposing bodies of dead birds lay amidst their flockmates. Animal Rising Co-Director Rose Patterson described what the investigation uncovered as “a litany of suffering” and “beyond barbaric”.The RSPCA Assured scheme is one of the largest animal welfare programs in the UK and the website claims that an RSPCA Assured label ensures that “the hatchery, farm, haulier and abattoir were all assessed and confirmed to have met the RSPCA’s higher farm animal welfare standards”. Animal Rising is calling for the RSPCA to drop the scheme, and instead work towards a transition to a secure and sustainable plant-based food system and rewilding program.</image:caption>

When Selina Blaser and her husband transformed their former beef farm into a vegan farm and sanctuary, Selina chose to name the farm "Lebenshof KuhErde." There is barely enough room for the larger animals to lie down, and they get sores on their legs from lying on the concrete floor. Corinne wants to transform the farm into a sanctuary and renovate and expand the barn, but does not know how to finance this project yet. Oberbutzberg 4, Bleienbach, Bern, Switzerland, 2022. <image:caption>Corinne Hadorn took over this "ausmelk" farm in Bern, Switzerland from her father. The German term "ausmelken" literally translates to "milk out". When cows kept on a larger dairy farm do not produce enough milk, their milk quality is not considered good, or they are unable to become pregnant any longer, instead of going directly to a slaughterhouse, they come here to be "milked out" for another year before finally being sent to slaughter. Corinne has just started working with Sarah Heiligtag of Hof Narr to transform her farm into a sanctuary, with the possibility that these cows will not be sent to slaughter.
